The Power of Shoes

What do your shoes say about you?

Shoes are on the short list of things I first notice about a person when I meet them. As an advocate of power-dressing, I am a firm believer that shoes speak volumes about us. Even though shoes are the last thing most people put on (so we tend to put the least amount of thought into them), they are one of the most important aspects of our dressing. The old saying goes, “Don’t judge till you walk a mile in my shoes”. Well darling, if your shoes look like they’ve been to the Sahara desert and back, I’d rather not walk two feet in them.

We all have our favorite, most comfortable pair that we are drawn to more often than we should be. This is where another old saying comes into play “if you love something, let it go”. When we’ve worn out our favorite pair, we hold onto it a little longer before letting go. When you have to ask yourself if it’s time to donate or toss a pair, that is the sign that you’ve had them for too long. The last thing you want is a clean, sharp outfit, and shoes that look like you should have ‘let go’ by now. Imagine checking out a guy at a bar and going down your list of boxes to check: clean shave (✓), nice smile (✓), sharp outfit (✓), ‘what are those’ shoes (abort! abort!). When I see an ensemble like this I feel like those shoes are the real you and the rest of the outfit is you trying really hard to impress. Nothing wrong with putting in the effort, but don’t stop at the socks. EVERY bit of your outfit is imperative in making a good impression on any occasion.
